Sneak Peek #2: What are you searching for?

Sneak Peek #2: What are you searching for?

From user routes, official bike paths to destinations, there is much to find on Bikemap to plan your cycling tours and make them an unforgettable experience. In light of this we are excited to share another sneak peek into Bikemap Next: the all-new omni-search complemented with an intelligent autocomplete that helps you search for routes and destinations right as you type.

Bikemap’s new search will make it easier to find the routes and places you are looking for. By inserting your keyword into the search field and hitting enter you can search for all routes matching that keyword. In comparison to the current search, the new search smartly aggregates results both from a keyword search and a location search. No matter if your keyword matches the location or is included in the name or description of the route, all relevant results will be filtered for you.

If you are searching for destinations the autocomplete comes in and you will instantly receive suggestions for destinations while typing. Click on them to be directed directly to the destination page, where we have collected the best routes for you in this region so that you can get inspired for your next bike tour.

If you got any ideas or suggestions, let us know in the comments!

Announcing Bikemap Next

Say hello to the future of Bikemap

by | Oct 9, 2015 | Bikemap next, Press

It’s a humbling and amazing thing to work on Bikemap, which is used by over 15 million people in over 80 countries of the World. From leisure cyclists to professional riders, from daily commuters to athletes, from mountain bikers to road bikers, from kids to the elderly, at some point Bikemap virtually empowers all of us.

Today, I’m very thrilled to announce that Bikemap is about to release a major update in the upcoming weeks: Say hello to Bikemap Next!

A leap forward in technology

Back in 2007, when Bikemap was founded, nobody could ever think of the vast traction it would gain over the following years. It’s 2015 now, and what has become of it? As I told you before, Bikemap is used in over 80 countries of the World, and the community has created with us the most comprehensive collection of both user-generated and official cycling routes which consists of more than 1.6M routes – wow, so stunning!

Technology has evolved over the years as well, and so have the habits of us as Bikemap users. As smartphones have become a vital part of our digital life, route browsing and planning are no longer Desktop-to-print issues, but are increasingly done completely on mobile devices. In other words: Users do not search for routes exclusively on their computers at home anymore, but want all functionality available everywhere and ride the routes with their smartphone, having everything synced across multiple devices. This is why the new Bikemap must be built from the ground-up for a mobile-first, cloud-first world. This new Bikemap adapts to today’s multi-device behavior and must help our users to be able to complete all tasks regardless of their current device and location.

Bikemap Next will deliver the right experience on the right device at the right time.

Less is more: Bikemap drops some languages

On the basis of major performance and quality improvements, often the term ‘less is more’ totally hits the mark. This is why we’re continuously running performance optimizations and cleaning up contents that do not match our quality standards. On the basis of one of those clean-ups, we’re about to remove the following languages from Bikemap, as they are not translated to a sufficient extent:

  • Bosanski / Босански
  • Български (Bulgarian)
  • Català
  • Chinese-simplified
  • Chinese-traditional
  • Dansk
  • Galego
  • Ελληνικά (Greek)
  • Hrvatski
  • Indonesia
  • Português
  • Русский (Russian)
  • Svenska
  • украї́нська мо́ва (Ukrainian)

All other languages will be unaffected.

@Website owners: In case you have implemented route widgets in one of the affected languages, don’t worry: the english version will automatically be integrated.

Fewer languages, but high quality content – more news about a content-rich and more diverse Bikemap are to come soon. Stay tuned!

Fresh Feature Friday

We’ve recently released a bunch of new features and bug fixes, including:

Optimized elevation data

Altitude values are now more precise throughout Bikemap, both on route pages and while creating a route in the route editor.

Add Wikipedia POIs to your route (again)

Activate the Wikipedia POI tool from the left toolbar. All known Wikipedia articles are now shown in the map. Click one to read it and permanently attach it to your route.

A more reliable location search

Having multiple outages in the past, the “Go to” search slot now works flawlessly, accepting your country, region, city, or specific address to find, independent from your language.

Performance Optimizations and other updates

Plus, we made a lot of minor bug fixes, implemented many under the hood improvements and some performance tune-up to make Bikemap feel more responsive and fun to use.

More to come, stay tuned!
